School Farming

What is school farming

  • Create an organic farm in the school on rooftop.

  • Offer practical training on Organic Farming to school children

  • Offer them an opportunity to connect back with nature.

  • Offer a well-structured Organic Farming Content to the school (in digital format), that is interesting and easily comprehensible for the students.

  • Make the program sustainable by training the teachers (nominated by the school), for teaching the organic farming content to the students.

  • Offer hand-holding support to the trained teachers for developing a time-table for school farming and for smoothly delivering the content to the students

  • Train the housekeeping staff to maintain the organic farm.

  • Use the freshly harvested organic vegetables in the Mid-Day Meal Scheme.

THE SCHOOL-FARMING CLUB

This club would consist of the following members:

  • Students, who are interested in receiving practical knowledge about organic farming

  • Teachers, who would like to become organic farming trainers

  • Housekeeping staff, who shall maintain the organic farm.

Members of the School Farming Club shall receive the following:

  • A School Farming Booklet (in digital form) contains practical information on the basics of organic farming and home-farming tips for growing organic vegetables.

  • A School Farming Badge, that identifies the person as a proud member of the school farming club.

  • A School Farming Certificate, that acknowledges the participation of the member in the school farming club.

  • A School Farming Cap

  • Seed packets (or saplings) of seasonal vegetables, for growing organic veg at home

  • Organic fertilizer packets, for growing organic veg at home.

 

WHAT ARE WE OFFERING?

ORGANIC FARM ON ROOFTOP USING PORTABLE FARMING SYSTEMS (PFS)

  • Installed on rooftops of the schools to grow fresh organic vegetables in a unique organic soil-less medium.

  • A modular and complete farming system that comes with a leak-proof container (life 5 years), organic soil less medium, trellising frame, drip irrigation system, and green net.

  • Each PFS shall exert a uniformly distributed load (UDL) of less than 140 kgs per sqr meter, which is well within the permissible limit of the maximum UDL of 250 kgs per sqr meter on a rooftop.

  • All seasonal vegetables can be grown in the PFS

ORGANIC PLANT PROTECTION KIT

  • Organic sprays and organic root applications for organically controlling pests and diseases

  • Pheromone trap for controlling fruit flies.

  • Yellow Sticky cards for controlling flying pests like aphids, jassids and thrips

 

OUR SCHOOL FARMING PROJECTS

Living Greens Organics Pvt Ltd is India’s first Urban Organic Farming Company (founded in 2013) that has been working on its unique mission of making our cities greener and more “live-able” by converting rooftops into organic farms.

W.r.t. School Farming, The Living Greens has worked on the following projects:

  • School Farming at Mayor World School, Jalandhar (Pre-Covid)

  • School Farming at DM Co-ed Public School, Bhopal (Pre-Covid)

  • School Farming at Collector Colony Urdu BMC School, Chembur, under the aegis of World Resources Institute (WRI) and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

  • School Farming at Wollen Mills BMC School at Matunga (West) under the aegis of Project Mumbai and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister of Education, Govt of Maharashtra, Sh, Deepak Kesarkar on 15/7/2023.

CLIMATE CHANGE STUDIES AT THE SCHOOLS (optional)

During this project, we can also conduct the following Climate Change studies to study the impact of Rooftop Farming on the following climate parameters:

  • Impact on Air Quality

  • Sequestration of CO2

  • Production of O2

  • Reduction in room temperature directly under the rooftop farming area

  • Reduction in the surface temperature of the rooftop area under farming.

  • All these studies shall finally lead to a conclusive indication regarding the Carbon Credits that can be generated from a school.
